How to Choose the Perfect Wallpaper for Your Living Room

Your living room is the heart of your home. Here's a step-by-step guide to picking a wallpaper that balances style, durability, and personality.

Start With the Room's Personality

Before you open a sample book, ask yourself: what feeling should this room give off? Calm and serene? Bold and social? Cozy and intimate?

Living rooms are multipurpose — they welcome guests, host movie nights, and double as the family's daily command centre. Your wallpaper has to hold its own across all these contexts.

Consider Wall Area & Scale

Large rooms can handle bold patterns — oversized florals, wide geometric repeats, dramatic murals. Small rooms benefit from vertical stripes (height-creating) or subtle textures that add depth without closing in.

Rule of thumb: Scale the pattern to the wall size. A tiny print on a large wall reads as noise; a giant motif in a compact room feels suffocating.

The Accent Wall Advantage

You don't need to paper four walls. A single accent wall behind the sofa or fireplace creates a focal point and lets you use a bolder pattern without overwhelming the space.

Finish Matters

Matte: Elegant, hides imperfections, not washable — best for low-traffic display walls

Satin: Slight sheen, wipeable — the best all-rounder for living rooms

Glossy: Dramatic, highly reflective — great for feature walls in larger, well-lit rooms

Embossed/Textured: Adds tactile depth; excellent for neutral colourways

Lighting Is Your Co-Designer

Warm incandescent bulbs make cool blues feel warmer. Natural north light makes warm yellows feel more neutral. Always view samples in your actual room at different times of day before committing.
