Non-Woven vs Vinyl Wallpaper: Which Should You Choose?

These are the two most popular wallpaper types in India today. Here is exactly what sets them apart and which one wins in different scenarios.

The Two Dominant Types

Walk into any wallpaper shop in India today and over 90% of what you'll see falls into one of two categories: non-woven (also called fleece) or vinyl. Understanding the difference will transform how you shop.

Non-Woven Wallpaper

What it is: A composite of synthetic and natural fibres, similar to a pressed felt. The printing surface can be paper, textile, or a thin plastic film.

Best for: Bedrooms, studies, low-humidity rooms, premium residential

Advantages:

Breathable — does not trap moisture behind the wall

Tear-resistant — can be stripped dry in one piece (huge for removal)

Dimensionally stable — does not expand when wet (no misaligned seams)

Eco-friendly options available (recycled fibre bases)

Disadvantages:

Less washable than heavy vinyl

Can show impressions if furniture presses against it

Slightly higher cost

Vinyl Wallpaper

What it is: A PVC layer bonded to a paper or fabric backing. The vinyl surface can be smooth, textured, or embossed.

Best for: Kitchens, bathrooms, children's rooms, commercial spaces, high-humidity environments

Advantages:

Highly washable (Class 2–3)

Moisture and stain resistant

Durable — resists scuffs and marks

Lower cost at entry level

Disadvantages:

Not breathable — can cause moisture problems on walls with damp issues

Harder to remove (especially older paste-the-paper types)

VOC concerns with lower-quality PVC formulations

Less environmentally friendly
